Carbon Zero at Refreshment Systems
We are on a journey to eliminate any negative impact we have on the environment. Since 2008, we’ve been working with a carbon management company to calculate and offset our corporate carbon footprint to become carbon zero.
Carbon Zero – Our Impact
As a company, we chose to support the Kenyan Energy Efficient Stove Project. The project builds energy-saving cooking stoves for villages in Kenya. Resulting in a 50% reduction in the need for firewood, preventing carbon from being emitted from the stoves. In addition to carbon prevention, it also provides families with a cost and time effective method to cook with.
The reduced need for firewood helps to prevent deforestation, in turn benefitting the wildlife in terms of their habitat. It is also a healthier method of cooking as it reduces indoor smoke by half. Indoor smoke is a serious problem in Africa and is dubbed the “kitchen killer”, as it is responsible for 1.6 million deaths in the country every year.
There are numerous project locations within the Kenyan Energy Efficient Stove Project; one of the project location linked to Refreshment Systems support of the stove project in Kenya is the “Kisumu” project, which is located near the city of Kisumu to the East of Kenya. Stoves have been distributed in the communities of East and West Kajulu, outside Kisumu in the Nyanza Province. Kisumu is Kenya’s third largest city and is one of the poorest areas in Kenya characterized by high incidences of maternal and infant mortality, with most of its people suffering from unemployment, poor health and poverty.
